Since they have other upscale places where they can get their nails done, I need them more than they need me. Knowing this, I put my customers' needs above all else. Second, I'll give everything I've got to any design you guys give me, and if I know in my heart that I can't pull it off, I'll be honest and assist you pick something wonderful while I get ready to practice on the design I was unable to accomplish. Last night I had my nails done. What should have taken an hour for a quick dip mani ended up taking a little over 2. I had a thick layer of dip on my nails, and even though it had been chipping off, it took a solid hour of soaking for the old dip to even budge. For context, normally after soaking for 15 minutes they are good to go. Before the technician even started shaping my nails it was already closing time. At this point, I’ve already realized my plan for the evening was out-the-window.We spent a lot of that time chatting and come to find out Kenny, my technician, actually spent a few years living in Frederick. He worked on 7th Street and we talked about how Frederick has grown over the years. Come to find out Kenny is also a man of many trades. He’s an electrician in the morning and a nail technician at night. As Kenny finished up, I thanked him several times for his patience, conversation, and taking the time to stay so late (knowing he had an early morning coming). I truthfully felt a little guilty that it took so long and that I was the only person keeping them there so late.His response is what stopped me: “We don’t rush around here. I’m happy to be here.”And the thing is, he wasn’t just saying that. You could tell he truly meant it.Kenny took the time to make sure my nails soaked properly and didn’t rush a step of the process just to make it out quickly. He was patient, and was present.If he would have rushed, we would have missed out on a sweet conversation, realizing the commonality of living in the same place and learning a little bit about each others lives.My experience reminded me of a good lesson. Hustle culture taught me to check off items on a to-do list and get as much done as you can. But, over the years I’ve come to realize hustle culture isn’t all it’s made out to be.I think “rush” is a good synonym for “hustle.” And while it might feel like you can check a lot of items off your to-do list when you rush, that kind of work doesn’t feel good - it isn’t fulfilling and it isn’t our best.There’s something wonderful that happens when you have space to show up creatively and fully to approach a task and breathe new energy into it. It leaves room for genuine connection, and it breeds joy and pride in your work.That’s the kind of work I enjoy doing. And it happens when we don’t rush.
